Today's lesson;

Today in lesson I went through my reserach from the BFI library and highlighted some more of my key points. It was information that I thought was relevant to my research question, and that would benefit my final outcome. I also began looking at more internet/general research that would also help my investigation. I was looking at more stereotypes that were seen after 9/11 on different races and people's personal accounts of the terrorist plot. I also found a personal account within my BFI research about the 9/11 attacks and highlighted parts that would be relevant.

Farenheit 911;

One of the most controversial and provocative films of the year, Fahrenheit 9/11 is Academy Award-winning filmmaker Michael Moore's searing examination of the Bush administration's actions in the wake of the tragic events of 9/11. With his characteristic humor and dogged commitment to uncovering the facts, Moore considers the presidency of George W. Bush and where it has led us. He looks at how - and why - Bush and his inner circle avoided pursuing the Saudi connection to 9/11, despite the fact that 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudis and Saudi money had funded Al Qaeda. Fahrenheit 9/11 shows us a nation kept in constant fear by FBI alerts and lulled into accepting a piece of legislation, the USA Patriot Act, that infringes on basic civil rights. It is in this atmosphere of confusion, suspicion and dread that the Bush Administration makes its headlong rush towards war in Iraq - and Fahrenheit 9/11 takes us inside that war to tell the stories we haven't heard, illustrating the awful human cost to U.S. soldiers and their families. Lions Gate Films will release the film nationwide on June 25th.

Profiling of Muslims/Arabs in the United States in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.

In the aftermath of the September 11th attacks in which 15 of the 19 hijackers were of Saudi Arabian origin and all were of Muslim faith, Arabs and Muslims complained of increased scrutiny and racial profiling at airports. In a poll conducted by the Boston Globe, 71 percent of Blacks and 57 percent of Whites believed that "Arabs and Arab-Americans should undergo special, more intensive security checks before boarding airplanes. Some Muslims and Arabs have complained of being held without explanation and subjected to hours of questioning and arrest without cause. Such cases have led to lawsuits being filed by the American Civil Liberties Union. Fox News radio host Mike Gallagher suggested that airports have a "Muslims Only" line in the wake of the 9/11 attacks stating "It's time to have a Muslims check-point line in America's airports and have Muslims be scrutinized. You better believe it, it's time. In Queens, New York, Muslims and Arabs have complained that the NYPD is unfairly targeting Muslim communities in raids tied to the alleged Zazi terror plot.

Narrowing The Idea's Down;

Through creating the brainstorm of my initial ideas, I feel it would be interesting to reserch into a particular performer and their work like Johnny Depp.
But through looking at the idea of Political context, I feel that I could relate to the topic more, allowing me to be more interested in the research. The terror alert is an ongoing problem today, meaning that social situations happening now could still affect and change the way I approach my research.

First Small Scale Lesson: 3rd November 2010

Today we were introduced to what we are expected to achieve in the small scale project. We have 8 critical approaches to choose from;

1) Star/Performer
2)Genre
3) Auteur
4) Social and Political Context
5) Gender
6) Ethnicity
7) Institution
8) Technology

At first glance I came up with a few idea's in which route I could take my small scale research to. An idea which first came up was looking into social and political contexts with the terrorists attacks (9/11 etc.) Another was looking at female directors and their effect on filmmaking (Kathryn Bigelow with The Hurt Locker.) To not tie myself down to these idea's I'll research into all the topics and see what other's many interest me.
